Apple officially released its latest mobile operating system, iOS 26, on September 15, 2025. It is compatible with the iPhone 11 and all newer models.
Key features of iOS 26
Design and interface
- "Liquid Glass" design: This is one of the most significant visual changes in iOS history, giving the interface a fluid, semi-transparent, and three-dimensional look inspired by the visionOS headset.
- Dynamic Lock Screen: The time and notifications on the Lock Screen now adapt and move to keep the subject of your photo wallpaper visible.
- Updated app icons: App icons can be customized with light, dark, color-tinted, or a new "clear" look that uses the glass-like effects.
Phone and messaging
- Call Screening: For unknown numbers, your iPhone can screen the call by answering and transcribing what the caller says, helping you decide whether to answer or decline.
- Live Translation: The ability to translate conversations in real-time is now built into the Phone, Messages, and FaceTime apps.
- Spam filtering: iOS 26 automatically filters out spam text messages and phone calls, routing them to a separate spam folder.
- Polls in Messages: You can create polls directly within a group chat to help make decisions.
Apple Intelligence (AI features)
- Advanced intelligence features: Apple Intelligence powers new features like Genmoji (creating custom emoji from text), Image Playground (generating unique images for chat backgrounds), and Visual Intelligence, which allows you to interact with content in screenshots and on your screen.
- Requires newer devices: Not all iPhones that run iOS 26 can use these advanced AI features. You will need an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 model, or newer to access the full suite of Apple Intelligence capabilities.
Other notable updates
- New Games app: A dedicated hub for gaming provides a central place to manage your game library, track achievements, and discover new titles.
- Adaptive Power Mode: A new AI-powered battery saver intelligently adjusts your phone's performance to extend battery life during periods of higher usage, which works differently from the standard Low Power Mode.
- Custom ringtones: You can now create a custom ringtone from an audio file stored in your Files app, a much simpler process than before.
- eSIM transfer with Android: It is now possible to directly transfer an eSIM from an Android phone to an iPhone without requesting a QR code from your carrier.
