Robert Redford 

Robert Redford, the acclaimed American actor, director, and independent film champion, passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89. He died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Sundance, Utah, surrounded by loved ones. 

A legendary career
  • Acting icon: Redford rose to international stardom in the 1960s and 70s with his roles in iconic films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Way We Were (1973), and The Sting (1973), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
  • Oscar-winning director: He made a successful transition behind the camera, winning an Academy Award for Best Director for his debut film, Ordinary People (1980).
  • Champion of independent film: Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 and the Sundance Film Festival, which became a vital platform for independent filmmakers and a cornerstone of the American film industry. 
A legacy of activism
Beyond his work in cinema, Redford was a lifelong environmentalist and political activist who used his platform to advocate for social change. In 2016, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his artistic achievements and environmental work. 
Final roles
Before his passing, Redford had scaled back his acting career in the mid-2010s, with his last substantial role being in The Old Man & the Gun (2018). He made his final on-screen film appearance with a brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
