No, it is not possible to legally purchase a handgun online in Nigeria. The country has strict firearms laws that make it illegal to sell or possess prohibited firearms, which include handguns, without proper authorization. 

Nigeria's firearms regulations
  • Handguns are prohibited: Under Nigeria's Firearms Act, revolvers and pistols are classified as "prohibited firearms".
  • Civilian access is extremely restricted: Only authorized security forces are permitted to possess these types of weapons. Civilian gun ownership is highly restricted, and an executive order signed in 2019 revoked all existing private firearm licenses, reinforcing the government's strict policy.
  • Firearm dealing requires registration: The Firearms Act stipulates that no person can deal in arms or ammunition by way of trade or business unless they are a registered firearms dealer.
  • Online purchases are illegal: The import of firearms by post is explicitly prohibited, and all firearm transactions must be conducted through official, registered channels. 
How firearm transfers work in countries where online sales are legal
In some countries, like the United States, it is possible to order a firearm online, but the process is still highly regulated and does not allow for direct shipping to your home. 
  1. Online order: The purchase is made on a licensed dealer's website.
  2. Shipment to a local dealer: The firearm is shipped to a local licensed Federal Firearms License (FFL) dealer, not to the buyer's address.
  3. In-person background check: The buyer must then go to the FFL dealer's location to complete the required paperwork and pass a federal background check before they can take possession of the gun.
