  Robert Redford  Robert Redford, the acclaimed American actor, director, and independent film champion,  passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89 . He died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Sundance, Utah, surrounded by loved ones.   A legendary career Acting icon:  Redford rose to international stardom in the 1960s and 70s with his roles in iconic films such as  Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid  (1969),  The Way We Were  (1973), and  The Sting  (1973), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Oscar-winning director:  He made a successful transition behind the camera, winning an Academy Award for Best Director for his debut film,  Ordinary People  (1980).
