Plot of the original film
The film's story begins with the accidental release of a highly contagious "Rage" virus from a laboratory in Cambridge.
- The virus causes those infected to enter a permanent, uncontrollable state of murderous rage.
- Twenty-eight days later, a bicycle courier named Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London seemingly deserted.
- Jim eventually encounters other survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and the group attempts to find sanctuary in a world overrun by the infected.
- In the film's climax, the group finds a military compound in Manchester, but discovers the soldiers, led by Major Henry West, have sinister intentions.
- After a confrontation with the soldiers, Jim, Selena, and Frank's daughter Hannah escape.
- The film has a slightly ambiguous ending, though most interpretations suggest a glimmer of hope for the survivors.
